Yes, you read that right. A while ago, Global AgeWatch Index had the UK listed as one of the best places for older people to live. You may question the British weather and the NHS, but when social and economic well being, among other practical factors, are being considered, the jolly old UK makes the top ten.
A lot of aspects challenge our ageing population; and high on the list is loneliness and boredom. This is why Age UK and other charities set up social clubs with the aim to connect active older people and engage them on a regular basis. They often roll out social activities such as walking, pub lunches, theater visits and days out on a coach or a minibus. In the UK, there are indeed many attractions that would make for an interesting day out and MET coaches are the ideal transport provider.
Met Coaches are experts in providing transport for scenic days out around the British countryside to groups of sight seers that need that little bit of extra attention, such as seniors. Our coaches are new, spacious and comfortable. We even have coaches with facilities such as an onboard toilet, sliding doors or tail lifts for individuals with mobility impairment. In addition, our professional drivers do not rush you around. Quite the contrary, your pace dictates ours.
If your social clubs or bereavement clubs plan to have a leisurely day out for your ageing members this year, here are some suggestions around popular places to visit in Oxford and the quintessentially English villages in Oxfordshire.
Oxford
The ‘City of Dreaming Spires’ is definitely one of England’s finest ancient cities, with winding cobbled streets and magnificent architecture and so much to offer to visitors. Your group can easily spend hours at the museums, have a picnic along the banks of the Thames or the River Cherwell, and visit its covered market where you can find traditional artisan products.
Whitney
Whitney is a beautiful example of a historic Oxfordshire village, characterised by buildings of Cotswold stone. The town dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, to as early as 969 CE. The experience has moved on though. You’ll find luxury fashion mixes with local products and those so typical English curiosities – the tea shop.
Minster Lovell
A little further down the road from Whitney is the small picturesque village of Minster Lovell sitting on the banks of the river Windrush. It is best known for the ruins of the 15th century Minster Lovell Hall. There are many legends and stories awaiting you to discover here.
Burford
Burford is a beautiful Cotswold town offering excellent views over the open countryside. A visit to Burford is not complete without touring the 106-acre Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, the largest privately owned zoological collection in the UK. The Tolsey museum and St Mary’s church are worth a visit too.
Bourton on the Water
Lying on a flat vale of the Cotswold, Bourton-on-the-Water is regularly voted as one of England’s prettiest villages. It’s the river Windrush which again brings an eloquence to an already serene and idyllic country village. Gorgeous at anytime of the year, it’s also a very romantic spot, with its beautiful bridges and tranquil village atmosphere, it’s a definite favourite among seniors.
