Rugby season is fast approaching and we’ve listed the major rugby events with all the crucial details you need below.
The roots of rugby can be traced back to 19th century England where many versions of the game were played in schools across the country. Since then, it has become the de facto national sport of many countries including Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and, of course, England. The thrilling atmosphere of a rugby game is an unmissable experience. MET Coaches can drive you to and from a game in comfort and style, and you’ll witness it for yourself.
In this post, we explore the key things you should know about rugby and the upcoming national and international rugby events.
Though the sport as a whole is known as rugby, there are actually two types of rugby – rugby union and rugby league. Rugby union is played with 15 per side and only seven substitutions are allowed. On the other hand, rugby league allows only 13 players per team, but each side can make ten substitutions. Rugby union and rugby league also differ in scoring systems:
Tries: Union – 5 points; League – 4 points
Penalties: Union – 3 points; League – 2 points
Drop goals: Union – 3 points; League – 1 point
Conversions: Union – 2 points; League – 2 points
If you’d like to see the differences in action, contact us for minibus or coach transport to any upcoming rugby union or league match.
As huge rugby fans, we understand how important it is to support your favourite rugby team in person. That’s why we provide reliable luxury minibus and coach hire transport services to rugby matches across the country.
If you’re unaware of upcoming rugby events to attend, we’ve got all the info you need in one place:
The Gallagher Premiership 2019/20 begins on 18 October 2019 with Bristol Bears playing against Bath at Twickenham; kick-off is at 19:45. If you can’t attend the inaugural game on 18 October, head to one of the four matches to be played on 19 October at 15:00. On that day, Saracens – the Heineken Champions Cup winners of 18/19 – will play against Northampton at Allianz Park. MET Coaches proudly support our beloved Sarries and provide them with luxury coach transport to all of their away games.
The Heineken Champions Cup (formerly known as the European Rugby Champions Cup) starts in mid-November with additional fixture details scheduled to be announced in August. The Heineken Cup is a major event as it’s for rugby clubs of countries that compete in the Six Nations. We’re proud to say that Saracens is the defending champions of the 2018/19 Heineken Champions Cup.
Kicking off with Harlequins v Bristol Bears at Stoop Memorial Ground, the Premiership Rugby Cup will begin on 20 September 2019. The Premiership Rugby Cup is an English knockout competition solely for Premiership Rugby teams. It was created in 2018 to replace the Anglo-Welsh Cup following the Welsh regions’ withdrawal. Our favourite team Saracens will play on 21 September 2019 at Riccoh Arena against Wasps.
From 20 September 2019 to 02 November 2019, the annual Rugby World Cup will be held in Japan. This will make it the first time it’s ever been held in Asia. The Rugby World Cup will kick off with Japan v Russia at Tokyo Stadium in Tokyo, Honshu Island. The England team’s first game is on 22 September at Sapporo Stadium in Sapporo, Hokkaido Island.
We’re more than happy to drive you to stadiums across the country to attend rugby matches. If the game is abroad like the Rugby World Cup, you can rely on our airport transfer services for minibus and coach hire transport to any of the following airports:
