On the 14th and 16th of November, retired Australian rugby union player, David Campese, will be in London to teach some lucky school children the tricks of the trade. The two schools in question, Watford Boy’s Grammar School and Belmont School, will experience an intense coaching session from Campese.
For an hour and a half, Campese will coach the students on the finer points of rugby and work with them closely to improve their technique. Following this, there will be a question and answer session where the students can ask the rugby legend more about his sporting past.
This incredible opportunity was set up by MET’s very own managing director, Peter Evans. Peter is extremely passionate about sport and is keen for young people to get involved and become motivated themselves. Peter also sponsors six remarkable sporting personalities, including boxer Sam Eggeington and table tennis player Charlotte Carey, as they strive to succeed in their field.
As part of his desire to inspire young people to get into sport, Peter saw the opportunity to invite David Campese, perhaps one of the most well-known rugby players in the world, to share his skills with students in Peter’s local area of Watford.
Campese’s rugby career is long and impressive. He was capped by the Wallabies, the Australian national rugby union team, 101 times in a career that spanned 14 years. He held the world record for the most tries in test matches, amounting to 64 tries, and broke the world record for the most tries scored by an international rugby player in the 1987 Rugby World Cup. In 1991, he also helped Australia to win the Rugby World Cup by scoring six tries and was heralded as the ‘player of the tournament’.
Twickenham is playing host to three games as part of the rugby Autumn Internationals this November. Campese himself is set to commentate at these games, lending his rugby knowledge to the nearly 200-year-old sport.
