From ancient Roman baths and spas to music, food and culture festivals, Bath has a lot to offer and we can drive you there.
Bath is the largest city in Somerset, South West England and its historical Roman connection has led to it becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. According to UNESCO, the city was founded in the 1st century CE by the Romans who built baths over the natural springs. By the 18th century under the rule of kings George I, II and III, Bath developed into a luxury spa city, inspiring many great works of literature and art. These buildings have since attracted hundreds of tourists every year, who flock to the picturesque city to see the archaeological sites and to marvel at its stunning architecture.
In addition to its famous Roman baths, the city of Bath has fascinating museums and incredible architecture. The city is home to the Victoria Art Gallery, where you can see a range of British oil paintings dating from the 17th century, and the Holburne Museum, which contains a unique collection of around 9,000 objects, paintings, and books. There’s also the 7th century Bath Abbey, which continues to cut an elegant shape in Bath’s city skyline many decades later.
The famous author, Jane Austen, lived and wrote in Bath from 1801-1806. She even set two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, in the city of Bath. Consider visiting the Jane Austen Centre, a small museum chronicling her life and the impact she had in Georgian England.
Bath hosts many festivals paying homage to everything from film and literature to music and comedy. The Bath Festival, the primary celebration Bath has to offer, is a city-wide event and is held every May (17-26 May 2019). The festival started in 2017 when the Bath International Music Festival merged with the Bath Literature Festival a year prior. It is now a celebration of everything artistic – from music and literature to comedy and spoken word – with a diverse line up of special guests each year.
Other festivals include the WOMAD Festival (25 Jul), FilmBath Festival (07-17 Nov), Bath Christmas Market (28 Nov-15 Dec), Bath Comedy Festival (typically Mar and Apr) and the Bath Fringe (typically May and Jun).
