Boxing is a one of the most renowned contact sports around the world. Dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE, it evolved to become a competitive sport in ancient Greece, remained popular in ancient Rome, and received a revival in the 17th century London as bare-knuckled fight for prizes.
Today, boxing matches attract a huge number of live and TV audiences throughout the world. 13th of May is a big day for boxing fans. At the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, Kal Yafai will fight against Suguru Muranaka for the WBA super-flyweight world championship title. In the same event, Sam Eggington will fight against Ceferino Rodriguez in the welterweight contest. This is a big moment for Sam and he is training very hard for it.
Boxing matches are about comradeship. The rules are simple. The actions are unpredictable. And to see people train very hard, push themselves far beyond their limits, and have the never-give-up spirit is inspiring.
In London, big boxing matches usually take place at the Wembley Stadium, O2 Arena, and of course, the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Smaller matches take place in leisure centres and other venues across London as well.
